Next stop….Palenque, in the jungle of chiapas. We stayed in the town as we arrived with no reservations after an 8 hour bus ride. The town was only a place to eat and sleep as it does not have much more to offer. It was hot and humid a drastic change from the freezing nights in San Cristobal. The goal was to see the Mayan ruins of Palenque, Yaxchilan and Bonampak….and it was worth it. Set deep in the jungle along the Guatemala border accompanied with the sounds and sights of monkeys, birds, bats, spiders and who knows what else…how anyone managed to build these spectacular buildings remains a mystery. After sweating, a few mosquito bites (no zika virus, as far as I know) we headed back to San Cristobal via Agua Azul and Misol-Ha for some swimming and cooling off.
